A Christmas Carol

Probably one of the most beloved Christmas stories in history, Charles Dickens´ A CHRISTMAS CAROL has it all: heroes, villians, ghosts, time travel, long-lost love, and a happy ending. With worldwide appeal, this story continues to captivate generation after generation.

Since it was originally published in 1843, A CHRISTMAS CAROL has become an irreplaceable part of our culture. Stephen Krensky´s careful abridgement of Dickens´ words is complemented by new artwork by one of today´s best loved illustrators, Dean Morrissey, author of SHIP OF DREAMS and THE CHRISTMAS SHIP. This is an edition of A CHRISTMAS CAROL that will certainly become a classic in its own right.

Christmas Traditions At Watchman Hill Inn

Against a golden sunset, a Sikorsky VS-44 approaches the harbor at Phillips Bay. As the brisk night air descends on this first night of December, Santa Claus arrives at the Watchman Hill Inn, heralded by two men in Revolutionary War dress and the traditional firing of the cannon. During the Revolutionary War, a citizens’ militia kept watch over the Outer Bay from the hill. If they spied British ships on the horizon, the cannon’s voice would alert the townsfolk to prepare a defense. These days, the sounding of the cannon is a cause for merriment. The holiday season in Phillips Bay is filled with the traditional joys of colored lights, caroling, feasting and church services, accompanied by a fresh blanket of snow.

Father Christmas: The Sleigh Ride

More exciting than a nip of frost in the air, more highly anticipated than the first snow, is the arrival of Dean Morrissey’s latest creation in his Father Christmas series featuring none other than the worldly traveler with a merry twinkle in his eye.

It’s Christmas Eve and the reindeer are in harness, the sleigh is filled to bursting with gifts. Circumnavigating the earth is a rare enough feat but doing so in the course of one blustery winter night, while making countless deliveries all the way around, is nothing short of remarkable. With his book of names and his sextant tucked nearby for ready reference and celestial navigation, Santa slaps the reins and his enchanted journey begins.

“I wanted to give a little of my sense of the character and the kind of wonder that surrrounds him,” says Morrissey, “both for kids and for grown-ups. Father Christmas is like Frosted Flakes®—a lot of adults don’t admit that they still love ’em.”

This lavish portrait of Father Christmas in action is sure to be a magical holiday gift for believers of all ages.

Father Christmas: The Workshop

“We all know about Santa Claus and his annual circumnavigation of the globe,” says the artist. “It’s quite a feat by any standard. But what is a bit less explored is what Santa does the other 364 days of the year. All year long and right up to Christmas Eve, Santa is a toymaker extraordinaire. He’s up to his elbows in a labor of love, turning out magical toys at a pace and of a quality unparalleled in the world. With this portrait, I wanted to depict the master craftsman engaged in his work. Hearing the bell above the door, he looks up to greet his visitor. Perhaps the visitor is us, come to catch a glimpse of the making of magic.”

Here at The Greenwich Workshop, the holiday season doesn’t begin until we unwrap a box from artist Dean Morrissey to reveal the year’s painting of Father Christmas. Over the past ten years we have had the pleasure of publishing Morrissey’s portraits of a very real, wise and generous man that just happens to be Santa Claus. In Father Christmas: The Workshop, he’s putting in a few hours after dinner, with a couple of industrious elves for companionship and help with the finishing touches. Why not let this picture of a twinkle-eyed craftsman decorate your home for the holidays this year?

Portrait Of Father Christmas

Preparing For The Journey

There comes a point on Christmas Eve when all the bustling activity the North Pole begins to slow. The reindeer are in harness, the runners waxed, the sleigh is filled to bursting with gifts. Reason For The Season

Enter a wonderland where twinkling lights shine on an array of symbols of the season. From attic hideaways come holiday treasures to cast their spell over the young at heart. The boxes and bows, tinsel and trim, wrap you in a warm, cozy spirit. The ribbons and reindeer, the soldiers and trains turn your mind back to the storefront windows, and you can almost imagine your nose pressed against the cold, frosty glass. Reminders of Santa and sleigh rides, falling snow and shining stars, bring back the excitement of a sleepless December night. Nuzzle a fuzzy teddy bear and hear the sound of a jingling bell or a glistening golden horn. Put yourself into the miniature world of a Dickens village and stroll the winter streets with the shoppers and carolers about. Toylike angel dolls and little snare drums are found beneath the fragrant evergreen. The wafting scent of pine boughs carries you to a magical place called Christmas. All these things form the accessories of the season, the decorations that lift and cheer us, but they only reflect the light of that which shines most brightly, a humble couple and a tiny babe, lying in a manger--the true meaning of Christmas--the reason for the season!
