A Christmas Eve Delivery

Christmas Eve Delivery is the third in William S. Phillips’ “Inns of Christmas Series,” having previously delighted his scores of loyal collectors with Christmas Eve at the Winchester Inn and Winter Visitors at the Kringle Hill Inn (right, both Sold Out at Publisher). This year, Phillips captures the spirit of the season with a heartwarming Christmas Eve tale. “An unusual Christmas Eve snowstorm has descended upon North Carolina bringing holiday travel to a near standstill,” Phillips explains.“Highways and airports are closed, forcing travelers to find shelter as the roads are cleared. For the fortunate family who has checked into the Fuquay Mineral Spring Inn and Garden, it will prove to be a most wonderful Christmas experience. The Inn’s gracious owners, John and Patty Byrne, knowing their guests disappointment at not spending Christmas Eve with loved ones, have sent for a Christmas tree with all the trimmings to be delivered to their room.A young boy with his faithful friend has volunteered to provide the delivery service in his wagon. After an elegant Christmas Eve dinner and some eggnog and spiced cider with cookies by the fire, our stranded travelers will return to a room decorated with the cheerful glow of a very special Christmas Eve tree.”

A Helping Hand

I learned a lot about spinning wheels while painting this piece and how different threads and yarns were spun from fleece a century ago by pioneer women. It is a very quiet, serene and meditative art form that I witnessed as my model worked in my studio for hours as I painted. This is also the perfect backdrop for a two year old to wreak havoc and I am experiencing this part first hand in my studio every day with our child. One can imagine this mother’s reaction when she soon turns to see why her girl is being so quiet!

Airship Adventures

All aboard the kitchen table for a journey to the sky! It's now our magic airship, and it can really fly! Off to new adventures, above the clouds we go, Sailing on imagination's breeze, we leave the earth below. For fun we like to parachute and quietly float down, And have our vessel pick us up before we hit the ground. Up here there are no limits to the sights that one can see, And we think that we could sail forever into eternity. Then comes the call that sends us home as fast as we are able, It's dinnertime, and Mother says we have to set the table.

Alexis

This is a portrait of a beautiful young lady in my church. I had come up with the concept for this painting which was to crackle the background to make it look old, and frame it in a gothic "lancet" frame.

So I asked for permission to paint Alexis, the painting turned out beautifully and has lead to many other commissions as I have used it many times to show potential clients my portrait abilities.

Apple Creek Yacht Club

Summer has come to Phillips Bay. Along Apple Creek, nestled among the Cotswold Hills about 30 minutes west of Phillips Bay, the sounds of meadowlarks and bullfrogs mingle with the aroma of flowers and fresh-cut grass. Apple Creek Valley maintains much of its original colonial charm. One can sit on the lawn at the Apple Creek Inn for a picnic in the sun’s warm glow, or enjoy the creek itself, with its clear spring water, swimming hole and slow current, well suited to the many idyllic pursuits of summer.   On this day, a pair of boys and their dog have gathered at the old stone footbridge for a little boating. Tying their boats to string with a metal fishing sinker as a counterweight, they set their imaginations afloat. These boys will build a rich treasury of memories over the years as members of the Apple Creek Yacht Club.

Apple Girl

Artist Morgan Weistling’s portraits of young children are among his most popular paintings with collectors. This delicate image of a girl amid a bounty of fall apples, laced with ruby, gold and grey tones, speaks volumes on the inner life of children. The darling kitchen helper, in her bonnet and smock, exudes the wonder of childhood innocence and grace. Just as we all recognize youth’s fleeting nature, all the more fleeting are the moments such as this.

Aspen Angel

Aspen was born very small (about 4 lbs). Doctors labeled her with “failure to thrive” yet she was then and is to this day a fighter. As a result of having a tiny frame, she has the perfect china doll profile, which I just had to paint. So I decided to create this painting of Aspen as a little angel in a moment of reverence.

The background and underpainting are acrylic. I then painted top colors using oil paint because it is easier to blend in oil paint.

Baby Bath

Much of Steve Hanks’ art carries subtle symbolism with children as the focal point. These paintings are filled with his hopes for the young. After all, what is more pleasing than a baby bath, except possibly two babies in the bath and in this particular painting, they are a friend’s fraternal twins, a boy and girl. Curiosity and fascination with water begins at the very beginning. These two are splashing, patting and swirling their way to figuring out the physical world, and each other. Is one leading the way or is the other giving orders? This simple summer backyard scene by artist Steve Hanks will find a home in your playroom, nursery, or bathroom.
