The promise of a Savior was fulfilled by our Heavenly Father in Christ, who is the Light of the World.

And Wise Men Came Bearing Gifts

Tom duBois has merged his love of art, poetry and music into an interesting and diverse career. His paintings of the Biblical stories of Noah’s Ark and the Nativity are a rich tapestry of research, color and imagination. For each image, duBois does extensive research, travel and photography - even sewing the costumes worn by his models.

"...and lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy." - Matthew 2:9-10

Be It Unto Me

I remember a moment after the birth of my first child when everyone had left and I was alone with my son for the first time. I looked at him lying on the bed and realized I was responsible for this new life. How could I teach him everything he needed? I was terrified

I held him close and the two of us cried. Those were tears of fear and tears of joy, but most of all they were tears of love. Looking into his little face that day I made promises to my Father that I have tried very hard to keep.

Was it different for Mary on that night in Bethlehem? Like any first-time mother she must have felt all the fear, all the joy, and all of the love that comes with a child. This painting reminds me that we are never alone when we look heavenward.

Behold The Lamb

God gave his gift to the world by sending His Only Begotten Son as our Savior. This catalyst in the plan of salvation caused great jubilation; the scriptures tell us the hosts of heaven "shouted for joy!" We must be ever mindful of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made by coming to Earth, and of the love that He has for each of us.

Good Tidings Of Great Joy

This work captures the awe of the shepherds as they learned the glad tidings of Christ's birth from an angel. The light of the angel illuminates the painting with a flame-like radiance, much as the news he brought must have filled the souls of the shepherds with joy and hope. At the same time, the angel, while brilliant in color, points towards Christ, a greater source of light and truth.

Journey

In Luke we read, "And Joseph also went up…to be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child." What must Mary have thought when Joseph told her they would be going to Bethlehem?

Leaving family and friends at the very moment when she was to deliver. What must she have thought as they crossed those dusty roads only to find shelter in a stable? It was her faith to go that brought hope into a hopeless world.

This life has been compared to a journey. We do not know the end when we begin, and there are times we cannot see even a single step ahead. But like Mary, we must have the faith to walk into the unknown and pray that God, who holds all things in His hands, will hold on to us.

Light Of The World

On that night of nights, Mary knew the angelic promise, "Thou shalt bring forth a son," was fulfilled as she tenderly held her newborn infant. In that moment, she could resonate with the heavenly host who praised God for the babe´s birth by saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Mary's Heart

"And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which has come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart."

- Luke 2:15-19

Every mother and child share a bond which remains unbroken. From his birth in the manger, all through his life, death and resurrection, Mary was instrumental in her son's years on earth. This striking image of mother and child captures a moment in the newborn life of Christ, and provides us all with a reminder of where we came from and who made us what we are today.

Moments

I wanted to capture the joy of the Christ child being born moments after it happened. I realize that very few (if any) mothers are standing shortly after labor, but I chose this position because I wanted a vertical composition.

In order to capture the moment as it really would look, when mother embraces her newborn child for the first time, I used a photo I took of my wife holding our child for the first time. I had my wife pose in a standing position wearing clothing appropriate for Mary, and composited the two pictures to create this painting.
